SHARED DEMANDS FOR HIGHER ED ADMINISTRATION

March 8, 2019

Incarceration to Education Coalition - New York University

Barnard No Aramark - Barnard College

Drop Sodexo - Scripps College

Shred the Contract - Western Washington University

Students for Sustainability - University of Central Oklahoma

Food Autonomy Campaign - Concordia University

We, the above listed student organizations at campuses across North America, are united in our shared vision for more just and sustainable food systems on our campuses, which we know will lead to more just and sustainable food systems overall. We recognize that our food system was built upon the genocide and land theft of First Nations and the enslavement of Black and Indigenous people; we know that the food system continues to rely upon and uphold white supremacy and recognize the way the higher education is complicit in this oppression. We also know that supporting a new vision for food sovereignty rooted in shared values is essential, and that our campuses have a responsibility to rise to meet this vision. We organize alongside other students, workers, food producers, and community members as a part of the Uprooted and Rising movement.

We call upon the administration at each of our schools to meet the following demands without delay:

  1. Break from Prison Industrial Complex- Do not renew or begin a dining contract with any food service provider that profits off of prisons, jails, and/or detention centers.

  2. Uphold Workers’ Rights - In shifting to a self-operated dining system or a new dining contract, offer all workers their jobs back while maintaining worker pay, seniority, and preserving any existing dining unions.

  3. Prioritize Student Involvement - In shifting to a self-operated system or new dining contract, create a committee that will oversee this process. Ensure that at least half of committee members are students, with prioritization of students of color, students facing food insecurity, and student dining workers. Offer public opportunities for the broader student body and campus community to engage, such as town halls and forums.

  4. Support the Real Meals Campaign** - In solidarity with the national Real Meals Campaign, ensure that the self-operated dining system or contracted dining system prioritizes the following: purchasing Real Food as define by the Real Food Calculator standards; purchasing from producers of color, and; reducing overall purchases of conventional animal products.

**Demand 4 is not applicable to Concordia University, given that the Real Meals Campaign focuses on colleges and universities located within the U.S.
